welcome to the

We adore seeing couples who are crazy-in-love and showcase their own unique style – especially when the bride’s hidden talent includes making her own modern bouquet (we love a good DIY!) for this casual, minimalist-style micro wedding!

Despite Covid-19, everything fell into place for this intimate fall wedding. Montana and Kyle knew they wanted to have a short engagement and they’d originally planned for a backyard wedding. But with safety at the top of their minds, this couple swapped out their larger affair for this minimalist micro-wedding in Calgary, proving that it’s okay for plans to change.

From the Couple:

What were your original wedding plans and how did they change?
Originally, we were planning on getting married in July 2021. We
planned on having a backyard ceremony and reception with around 45
people. When we got engaged in April 2020, the pandemic was at a high peak, and so as much as we wanted to have a short engagement from the beginning, our original plans didn’t look like something we were going to be able to do with everything going on.
What was the rescheduling process like for you?
The rescheduling process was a little hectic! But honestly, so many things fell into place and that’s why we decided to get married sooner. Kyle’s mom just happened to be coming to Calgary over a weekend why my [Montana’s] sister already had some time off from work, and we reached out to our photographer, Katelyn – who was our only booked vendor – and she was available so we just went for it!
Do you have any advice for couples currently looking at downsizing their wedding?
I think our one piece of advice for anyone thinking about downsizing, is that if it’s something you’re able to do and have any desire to do, you should just go for it. You will undoubtedly worry about people being upset that they’re no longer a part of your day, but they will understand. We feel so lucky that we were able to have such an intimate day, and really enjoy everyone’s company. It was really what we wanted, and didn’t feel like a compromise.
What was the most important thing to you when planning your wedding day?
Because this was a wedding in 2020, the most important thing to us was safety. That still feels like a weird thing to have to plan for with a wedding, but it was absolutely top of mind for everything we did. If we couldn’t have figured out a way to make everything safe, we wouldn’t have done it.
What was your favourite element of the day?
The best part may have been our food. In trying to plan a meal that was “Covid-friendly”, allergy friendly, vegan friendly… the list goes on, we decided to have pizza, salads, and ice cream from Village Ice Cream. Kyle even surprised me with a vegan mint chocolate chip that he schemed with Village – Montana’s Mint! The food was pretty casual, everything we like to eat, and we got to throw our masks on and serve our guests.

From the Photographer:

What made this wedding so special?
The couple. Montana and Kyle hands down made this day. These two are just crazy in love!! The way they look and interact with one another is so beautiful to witness. It was a relaxed, no stress day and they truly enjoyed every second of the day together!
Do you have any advice for couples having to postpone, or having to
downsize their wedding?
Yes! Get the original plan out of your mind. Start fresh and stay true to you. Stay positive, your getting married after all!! If you are downsizing significantly use some of the money that is being saved to making it your dream day with your closest people, go all out on that flower arch you saved to your Pinterest or those wedding shoes you wanted but didn’t get. You can spoil yourself a little bit! Think about the details that will make it feel so special and no matter what it will truly be the best day!
Do you have anything to say about this year's wedding season?
This year was a big learning curve for the whole wedding industry as well as couples trying to get married. Prospectives had to change. We got back to basics, what weddings are truly about and that is the couple and the vow they are making to one another. Weather you planned of a big wedding, a destination wedding or whatever. Once restrictions made these weddings not possible, having an intimate day ended up being beyond perfect. All of my couples that were married this year said just that at the end of the day, “we didn’t think about our original plan once. Today was perfect, everything I could have dreamed of!”
