Themed weddings can be amazing events, filled with inspiration and thoughtful details that can wow your guests!
But it’s easy for themed weddings to go too far, and end up looking cheesy and over-the-top. You want to look back at your wedding photos and smile – not cringe… So what’s the line? How do you know what’s too far and what to include?
Chelsea from Coco & Ash collaborated with a stellar team of Calgary vendors to create this glamourous “Great Gatsby” inspired shoot at Calcutta Cricket. We love every detail of this Roaring 20’s themed wedding, and appreciate the subtle details and thoughtful elements they chose to include.
Here’s what Chelsea had to say about the shoot:
So we thought who better than Chelsea to give you tips on how to plan a themed wedding on your own – without going over the top!
Hey!! My name is Chelsea Townsend and I am the founder/owner of Coco + Ash Weddings and Events.
I began my planning business following the births of my sons – Cohen and Asher (see the connection ;)) as planning, epic love stories and celebrations have always brought me joy!
It is my promise to help you feel inspired, confident and excited to plan your unique wedding or event and I strive to bring your personal story to life with my passion, professionalism and expertise.
Planning a themed wedding you say?!
Here are some basic tips!
ONE
Select a Simple Palette
Keeping your colour palette simple and minimal will allow for focused ideas and decision-making. Limiting your palette will also leave your overall aesthetic easy on the eye.
Two
Do Your Research
Learn about the theme or era!
Look up inspirational images and get ideas that speak to you.
Three
Create a Mood Board
Develop a mood board that categorizes different wedding elements. Make sure your ideas are cohesive with one another and on track with your general theme.
Weed out any ideas that don’t fit before you start vendor scouting.
Four
Collaborate with The Experts
Share your ideas and inspiration, but also allow the baker, florist, or hair stylist to put their own expert twist on it! Doing so should produce an aesthetic that isn’t matchy-matchy and over the top!
Five
Know Your Non-Negotiables
If having a Gatsby inspired hairstyle is a must for you, then simplify other details like tablecloths or charger plates that aren’t as important.
Six
Stay Focused
It’s easy to want to add the theme into every element… But that isn’t necessary. Themed details here and there will create an elegant themed wedding without it feeling tacky and overdone. You don’t want guests to lose focus on the décor instead of celebrating your marriage!
