Looking for engagement session ideas? Look no further! We are so happy to be sharing 5 adorable engagement sessions to inspire ideas and activities for your own engagement photos! Plus we have the photographers from each of the sessions sharing some tips along the way!
Our biggest piece of advice is to consider choosing an engagement session activity that is meaningful to you as a couple! This will not only make your engagement photos really special and personal to you, but will help you be more comfortable during the session as well (because you’re doing something you enjoy!). You’ll see through this post that by choosing a more personal and intimate activity or a noteworthy location, it adds a distinct personality to your session and it ends up being so much more of a memorable experience.
We’re obsessed with Kimi and Damien’s intimate and playful engagement session. This creative date-night inspired session, a “paint night for two”, was followed by a soak to rinse off all the paint shenanigans from that evening.
From the Photographer:
Whenever I am planning an engagement session with my couples I always want to make sure that it is as true to them as possible. I truly get to know my couples & we pick out a few things that they enjoy doing together, which for Kimi & Damien was painting together! They wanted to include some intimacy in their session, so we chose to do an intimate bathtub session after painting! Seanna Leaf Photography
What makes this session unique?
What makes this session unique is that it’s a very true representation of this couple, and the fact that it kind of had two parts to it was important. The more playful painting part, and then the more intimate bathtub part. It’s also cool for couples to see that their engagement photos can be done indoors as well.
Advice for couples choosing their own engagement session activity?
I always tell couples to treat their engagement session like a date! What would you like to do on a date? What do you enjoy doing as a couple – take some ideas from there & run with that! Also having a great relationship with your photographer will mean that they understand you as a couple, and can also ad their own artistic flare while staying true to you.
Filled with nostalgic music, an intimate in-home session, and night life in downtown Vancouver, this joy filled engagement session found special moments for Anthie and Sam in their day to day life.
From the Photographer:
Anthie and Sam’s engagement session took place on Davie St. in Vancouver where they live, and we kept it close to home. We started the session off with hanging out in their apartment; with the magnificent view of the water from their window and records spinning in the background, kicking it on the couch was the perfect starting point.
From their apartment, we headed to the beach down the block where they spend lots of their evenings together and finished off with dinner and some fun photos under the many neon signs that Davie Street has to offer. Pam Kriangkum Photography
What makes this session unique?
I followed Sam and Anthie throughout their day to day life making for a longer session that included personal touches and their personal style, also not very many engagement sessions occur at night!
Advice for couples choosing their own engagement session activity?
Do what feels right for you. While a beautiful set of photos is always the end goal, don’t be afraid to find a photographer understands your vision (or can help you form it), and don’t be afraid to find someone who does something out of the box if that is what you’re after.
Swoon worthy in every way possible, Kelli and John’s engagement session in the empty Orchard Restaurant is a toast to good wine, that newly-engaged glow, and a romantic atmosphere.
From the Photographer:
This intimate engagement session took place in the beautiful Orchard restaurant. Kelli and John spent the morning cuddling on the couch and flirting around this unique and local restaurant. Kelsey Vera Photography
What makes this session unique?
When brainstorming indoor locations for their engagement session, Kelli and John suggested the idea of shooting at Orchard restaurant. This gorgeous venue features tall windows, a cozy atmosphere, and tons of gorgeous greenery. We had the space to ourselves and had so much fun lounging around, drinking wine, and snapping some steamy pics!
Advice for couples choosing their own engagement session activity?
When brainstorming ideas for your engagement session with your photographer, consider activities that you love doing together and choose your location accordingly. Ice-skating at the plaza? Walks in the park? Maybe swims at the beach? In addition to the gorgeous mountain scenery and parks in the area, there are tons of unique hidden gem locations that you and your photographer might already know about. Maybe you have visited a cool coffee shop that you go on dates to regularly; Let your photographer know and see what they can set up for you. With proper permission, any space could be the perfect location for your engagement session.
How fun is this moving in session!? New home owners Chelsey and Kyle snuggle up for the camera to celebrate their engagement and their new digs!
From the Photographer:
We decided it would be fun to start their engagement photos inside their brand new home! I asked the couple to have some of their fav snacks out along with any games they like to play to showcase what they like to do on a date night in! We hung out inside their new home, took a few photos, they had a drink, popped champagne and then after we ventured out around their new area to do some outdoor photos! Carissa Marie Photography
What makes this session unique?
I think doing it inside their home and celebrating not only their engagement but another exciting life event is a double whammy! This part in their lives is full of big new adventures and it’s important to incorporate them all!
Advice for couples choosing their own engagement session activity?
I think it’s easy to look at social media and Pinterest and want to go somewhere based on looks alone but I also think it’s important to pick a place that is meaningful to YOU. When you look back on your photos it makes it so much more impactful to have a memory attached to the location of where you are together. Ask yourselves what you like to do on a date night, how do you spend a Sunday morning together and start to pick a part your relationship in terms of who you are and then you can start to find locations or activities that truly represent you!
Browsing through their favourite records, Jasmine and Tyler’s engagement session is a true reflection of their love for music, and each other. We’re obsessed with activity based engagement sessions, especially when they give us insight into the couple and their unique love!
From the Photographer:
Jasmine and Tyler wanted to do something a bit different than your typical engagement session- so they decided to have part of it take place in a record store, Recordland in Inglewood! With their love for music and Jasmine’s career as a music teacher, it was a very suiting and unique to them location.
We met Jasmine and Tyler in Inglewood on a beautiful fall evening. Beginning the session in Recordland, we browsed the store with them, searching for iconic and unique records while photographing them. We had so much fun capturing them as they interacted and looked through the shop, as well as coming up with new poses and prompts! Lewis & Co
What makes this session unique?
Most engagement sessions we photograph are outdoors- while we always love shooting in the mountains and nature this was so fun to push us out of our comfort zone creatively!
Advice for couples choosing their own engagement session activity?
Consider incorporating a location or activity that is special to you as a couple- what better way to have your session represent the two of you! Maybe its getting icecream together, having a beer at your favorite brewery, biking, having a picnic at your favorite park- the options are endless. Do not be afraid to think outside the box!
