If you’re in love with sun-kissed bliss and golden tones, you’ll definitely want to opt for an engagement session at golden hour! And when it comes to a sunset engagement session, it can be hard to know how to prepare, or even what to expect. Your wedding photographer is a great source of information and inspiration when it comes to all your engagement photo questions. They’ve got your back! And that’s why we’re so glad to have local photographer Kelsey Vera Photography here to share her best sunset engagement session tips and advice!
one.
Do Your Research
Make sure you know what the light will look like at whatever location you pick, and that it will even be visible. I try and pick locations that have nice views of the horizon. If you and your photographer have never been to your chosen location at sunsetm take the time to visit a couple days before at the same time you are planning to shoot and figure out how the light will effect your surroundings. For example, you will most likely lose the light from a mountainside location faster since the sun will begin to hide behind the mountains as it sets. Whereas a field or inner city sunset may last longer due to better views of the horizon and convenient vantage points.
two.
Arrive Early for Golden Hour
Golden hour is the time shortly before sunset (or just before sunrise) where you will get that stunning orange glow. I make sure my couples and I have arrived at our location at least an hour before the sunset, and there are multiple benefits of this; you will have time to get comfortable in-front of the camera before the light show, and you will be able to capture the sunset from start to finish. Glow from a sunset could last almost an hour, or just minutes depending on the location.
three.
Choose Your Outfits Wisely
I advise my couples to wear golden or blush tones for these sessions to compliment the light of a sunset. Pinks, oranges and whites paired with denim are my favourite combos. In my experience, these options will bring out all the gorgeous tones and colours achieved at a sunset session!
